Indian National Cricket team player Karun Nair is having an exceptional run in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The Vidarbha captain recently scored his fourth consecutive century, leading his team to the semi-finals.

But there’s even more to celebrate for Nair. At 33, he’s catching the selectors’ attention for the upcoming Champions Trophy which is scheduled to play at Pakistan and could even make a return to Test cricket during India's tour of England.

In the current Vijay Hazare Trophy, the right-hander is dominating. With 664 runs in just six matches, he’s the highest run-scorer so far. What stands out is that he hasn’t been dismissed yet, having already scored five centuries. Vidarbha is now gearing up for their semifinal clash with Maharashtra.

Nair’s century streak started with brilliant 112 against Jammu & Kashmir, followed by an unbeaten 44 against Chhattisgarh. He then scored 163 against Chandigarh, 111 not out against Tamil Nadu, 112 against Uttar Pradesh, and finished with a 122 against Rajasthan.

Reports suggest that selectors are closely watching Nair, especially with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli under scrutiny for their recent performances in border Gavaskar trophy. The selectors are looking for an experienced middle-order player during this period of transition, and Nair brings that experience, having last played for India in 2017. He’s also known for his memorable triple century against England, one of only two Indian players to achieve that.

Ajit Agarkar, head of the selction committee, is reportedly particularly interested in Nair’s ability to play spin and his overall batting consistency during this crucial phase for Indian cricket.

“As India enters a transitional phase, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggling in Tests, Karun (Nair) is a player the selectors are watching closely,” a report in The Indian Express stated.

Nair's fantastic form has definitely put him back in the conversation for a national call-up.
