In the wake of a controversial comment made during the India-Pakistan match at the T20 World Cup 2024, former Pakistan cricketer Kamran Akmal has issued a public apology to Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community. The incident occurred after Pakistan's narrow six-run loss to India, during which Akmal made an inappropriate remark about Arshdeep Singh, the Indian bowler who delivered the final over.
The comment, which was derogatory towards Singh's Sikh religion, was made during a television interaction in Pakistan. Akmal's words, accompanied by laughter, quickly drew widespread criticism on social media. The video, in which Akmal can be heard making a disparaging remark about Sikhs bowling after midnight, sparked outrage among fans and former cricketers alike. Kamran can be heard saying "Anything can happen, It's 12 past midnight, a Sikh shouldn't bowl after midnight".
Harbhajan Singh, a former Indian cricketer and a proud Sikh, responded strongly to Akmal's comment on his social media profile. Singh reminded Akmal of the historical contributions of the Sikh community, stating, "Shame on you Kamraan Akhmal.. You should know the history of Sikhs before u open ur mouth. We Sikhs saved ur mothers and sisters when they were abducted by invaders, the time invariably was 12 o'clock. Shame on you guys.. Have some Gratitude Kamran Akmal."
The backlash against Akmal's comment was swift and severe, with many in Pakistan and around the world condemning the former cricketer's offensive statement. In response to the growing criticism, Akmal took to his social media profile on Monday night to issue a formal apology.
"I deeply regret my recent comments and sincerely apologize to Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful. I have the utmost respect for Sikhs all over the world and never intended to hurt anyone. I am truly sorry," Akmal wrote.
