When James Anderson retires from Test cricket against the West Indies at Lord's next week, he will become a fast-bowling mentor in the England coaching staff.

The 41-year-old, who has been the most successful fast bowler in Test cricket history, has been told by England that they wish to move on, thus he will no longer play for the country.

Anderson's 188th and last outing for England in red-ball cricket will take place during the forthcoming Test match against the West Indies. He won't, however, be leaving the cricket scene completely. England's managing director, Rob Key, has stated that Anderson will stay with the club for the duration of the summer, bringing a wealth of expertise to the coaching staff.

“He’s got so much to offer English cricket. We don’t want to see that go. When we asked him, he was keen. He is going to have a lot of options. English cricket would be very lucky if he chooses to stay in the game,” Key said.

Anderson is currently representing Lancashire against Nottinghamshire in the County Championship in Southport. Key stated that following his last Test, Anderson's future plans—specifically, his position with Lancashire—will be determined.

“What he does with Lancashire will probably work out after the Lord’s Test. We've got some conversations to have after to find out what he thinks is the best thing to do. Everything so far has been him gearing up for this Test match,” Key added.
