Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined Rs 12 lakh for a slow over-rate during his team’s 36-run loss to Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Saturday. This penalty came after MI suffered their second consecutive defeat of the season leaving the team winless and placing them ninth in the points table.

According to an official IPL statement this is MI’s first slow over-rate offence of the season and Pandya was fined under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct which deals with maintaining the minimum over-rate. The fine of INR 12 lakhs was imposed as part of the standard punishment for a team’s first slow over-rate offence.

However new rules introduced for the IPL 2025 season have quashed the old penalty that included a ban for the skipper in case of repeated slow over-rate offences. Instead a demerit points system and suspension points valid for 36 months have been implemented by the IPL governing council this year. These changes aim to streamline over-rate management while reducing the harsher penalties from past seasons.

After the match, Pandya acknowledged that Mumbai Indians fell short in several areas, both in batting and fielding. "I think we were 15-20 runs short in both our batting and bowling. We weren’t professional enough in the field, making basic errors that cost us 20-25 runs, and that’s a lot in a T20 game," Pandya said, reflecting on the loss. He also praised Gujarat Titans' openers, saying, "They batted brilliantly without taking many risks, doing all the right things to build a solid innings."

Despite the setback Hardik Pandya remains hopeful as Mumbai Indians look to bounce back after two tough losses.
