Hayley Matthews will lead the Melbourne Renegades this season, taking on the role after captain Sophie Molineux was ruled out for the entire season as she continues to recover from a serious knee injury.
In a strategic move this season, the Melbourne Renegades have entrusted the dynamic Hayley Matthews with the leadership. This transition came when unfortunate circumstances meant that the indomitable Sophie Molineux was sidelined due to a persistent knee injury. Matthews, a draft acquisition now in her second consecutive season with the Renegades, bravely stepped in for Molineux during WBBL 08 when he suffered a debilitating cruciate ligament tear in November.
Matthews, who was taken in the draft and will spend a second consecutive year with the Renegades, filled in for Molineux after tearing her ACL during WBBL|08 last November.
The West Indies captain received the nod ahead of a host of other leadership candidates in the Renegades squad, including India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Wales Fire Department captain Tammy Beaumont.
This will be Matthews' second season in red, following a successful WBBL|08 in which she scored a team-high 253 runs and took nine wickets.
Following Molineux's injury, she also captained the team for two games last season, winning both games.
“While it is disappointing not to have Sophie for the WBBL|09 season, we are fortunate to have such an experienced leader in Hayley who is ready to step up,” said Melbourne Renegades General Manager James Rosengarten.
The Renegades can also confirm they have signed South Australian Emma De Broughe as a replacement for Tayla Vlaeminck.
The Renegades will open their WBBL|09 season against the Brisbane Heat this Friday from 3pm at the CitiPower Centre.
