In a sad turn of events for Pakistan cricket, Mohammad Nazir, the former Test cricketer and umpire, passed away on Thursday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness. His death has shocked the cricketing community, as Nazir was a respected figure in Pakistan’s cricket history.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed its sorrow over his passing on X, writing, “The PCB is saddened by the passing of former Test cricketer and umpire Mohammad Nazir. He represented Pakistan in 14 Tests and four ODIs from 1969 to 1984, taking 37 international wickets. He also officiated five Tests and 15 ODIs as an umpire. PCB offers its heartfelt condolences to his friends and family.”

Nazir’s career spanned over 14 years, from 1969 to 1984, and he played 14 Tests and four One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan. Known for his off-spin bowling, Nazir’s debut in the Test arena was memorable. In his first match against New Zealand in 1969, he took an impressive 7 wickets for 99 runs, setting the stage for a promising career. He went on to take 34 wickets in his Test career, with his last ODI appearance coming against Australia in 1984.

Later in life, Nazir transitioned to a career as an umpire, officiating in five Test matches and 15 ODIs between 1994 and 2000.
