'Don't compare Mithali with Sachin, she is unique' says Gavaskar

Being the first ever female cricketer to score 6000 one day international runs, Indian skipper Mithali Raj created history in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, 2017 in England. He crossed the landmark during her 69 run knock in the match against Australia in Bristol on Wednesday. The 34 year old captain was among loads of appreciation from former cricket greats of India. Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar depicted her as a unique performer when he was asked whether Mithali Raj could be compared to Sachin Tendulkar of India’s women cricket. Talking to NDTV, Gavaskar said, “Mithali Raj is an inspiration and has carved a niche for herself. She is standing at the top of a mountain and we should celebrate that.” “It was a fantastic achievement. Her longevity and resilience to carry on is an inspiration for both men and women. It is a proud day for Indian cricket. We have the highest scorers in Tests, ODIs and now women’s ODIs” – Gavaskar said further. Mithali was a teenage sensation when she scored her maiden one day international hundred on debut in 1992. She was 16 years old and became the youngest ever woman cricketer to score a hundred. She went past England’s Charlotte Edward’s 5992 runs to become the first woman cricketer to score 6000 ODI runs. She carries the average of 51.52.
