Dominica has withdrawn from hosting matches for the 2024 T20 World Cup as the event will take place six months away in the Caribbean islands and the United States. The government expressed that it was unprepared to take on the responsibility of hosting a global tournament on time.
Dominica will not host any matches during the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup. The government of Dominica stated in its decision that the country would not be able to complete work on training and match venues before the start of the tournament.
Dominica was one of seven countries in the Caribbean shortlisted to host the T20 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA from June 4 to 30 next year. This list was prepared by the ICC in coordination with CWI based on offers from local governments. All major cricket destinations in the West Indies are understood to have submitted bids, except three countries: Jamaica, Grenada and St Kitts and Nevis.
Because the infrastructure was not available in time for the World Cup, the Dominican government withdrew from the event due to incomplete preparations.
A government statement announcing this decision can be found below.
“The ICC Men's T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the United States in June 2024. The Government of Dominica has expressed interest in hosting a series of these prestigious matches at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium (WPSS) Subsequently, Dominica has been shortlisted as the host country for one group stage match and two matches in the Super 8 phase of the tournament, subject to change the fulfillment of various obligations set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
“Several concrete actions have been taken at both Windsor Park Sports Stadium and Benjamin’s Park, including commencing modernization and improvements to practice and match facilities, various assessments and the creation of additional pitches where necessary.”
“However, the implementation timelines submitted by the various contractors indicated that it would not be possible to complete these works within the established time frame before the start of the tournament. “As a result, it has been decided not to host any of the matches of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as it would not be advisable for the Government of Dominica to commit to hosting these matches,” the statement continued.
Windsor Park in Dominica has been selected for a group stage game and some matches in the Super 8 phase of the tournament. The hosting agreement is dependent on the venue meeting certain obligations set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Cricket West Indies reacts to Dominica's decision
