Former Australian opening batsman David Warner surprised the cricket fraternity after he expressed his interest to come out of retirement ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 series against India.
David WarnerDavid Warner, who recently retired from Test cricket earlier this year after the Pakistan Test series, dropped a hint about possible return if Australia finds itself in need of his services. Despite stepping away from the longest format of the game for personal reasons, he revealed his willingness to make a comeback under certain circumstances.
The explosive opener retired earlier this year, aiming to conclude his red-ball career on his own terms, but he remains open to reconsidering if his country calls.
In a conversation with News Corp, Warner made his stance clear about potential comeback. "I’m always available, just got to pick up the phone. I’m always dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red ball game (first round of the Shield) since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation," he added.
Warner further acknowledged that while his decision to retire was driven by the desire to close his Test career on a high note, he would still be willing to come out of retirement if needed.
“Honestly, if they really needed myself for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play," he shared.
The 37-year-old also admitted that stepping away from the Test arena was the right decision at the time, allowing him to finish the game on his terms.
He added, "I did retire for the right reasons to finish the game, and I wanted to finish." However, his stance is not entirely solid as Warner indicated that he would answer the call should the selectors find themselves in a bind. "My hand is up if they desperately need someone," the former Australian opener added in a statement.
