Sri Lankan captain Shanaka is out of form with the bat in recent times. On top of that, in the final of the Asia Cup, Sri Lanka under his leadership was all out for 50 runs. Naturally, Shanaka's leadership was questioned. However, Shanaka's leadership was discussed more than the focus was on his form.
It was reported in the media that the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had started looking for his replacement. Shanaka may leave the leadership before the World Cup. There were even reports that he would be left out of the World Cup team.
But pushing all the discussions aside, the new news is that Shanaka will be the leader of Sri Lanka in the upcoming World Cup. According to Lankan Media Newswire, an official of the Lankan Cricket Board confirmed this to the media.
There are 15 days left for the start of the World Cup. Still, Sri Lanka has not announced the team like Bangladesh and Pakistan. Basically, SLC is waiting for Wanindu Hasaranga’s update who got injured before the Asia Cup and missed the tournament. The board will announce the team after knowing the latest status of his injury.
SLC also announced the Asia Cup squad a day before the start of the tournament. However, the ICC has set a fixed time for the announcement of the World Cup team which is September 27. There are rumors that veteran Angelo Mathews may get a call to the Lankan World Cup squad.
