In an interesting turn of events, West Indies cricketer John Campbell's ban was lifted after he successfully appealed a punishment linked to last year's Super50 Cup final, which was rain-affected.  Cricket West Indies (CWI) made it clear, though, that this change of heart doesn't mean Campbell is free or guilty.

In December 2024, the Super50 Cup final took place. Both team coaches, John Campbell of the Jamaica Scorpions and Raymon Reifer of the Barbados Pride, did not show up for the toss, even though the officials said it was safe to play.  The match was called off because of this, and no team won the crown.

Campbell was then given a ban for not doing what he was supposed to do as captain.  He did, however, appeal the ruling, which caused the CWI's Disciplinary Tribunal to look it over again.

CWI says that the decision to lift Campbell's ban wasn't based on a new look at the event, but on a mistake in the way the punishments were given.  The Tribunal came to the conclusion that the way the charges against both captains were brought was wrong.

In a formal statement, CWI clarified, “The procedure of bringing the charge was flawed and the matter therefore could not be heard. It is important to note, the view is not pertaining to the merit of the charge but rather the process of the charge being laid.”

Furthermore, no players from that final will receive match fees or prize money, reinforcing the notion that the abandoned match remains a stain on the tournament.

Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, acknowledged the tribunal’s findings, "We acknowledge the Tribunal's observations and respect their role in ensuring procedural fairness. While Mr. Campbell's expression of remorse and admission has been accepted, we recognize the concerns raised during Reifer's hearing regarding the overall process and have decided to withdraw the suspension.

"That said, this does not absolve individuals of responsibility where there have been serious breaches. No ruling has been made to declare a winner or overturn any match outcome--this is purely a matter of addressing procedural fairness. Neither has anyone been found guilty or innocent of charges. Our commitment to discipline, professionalism, and the integrity of the game remains unwavering."
