Though the match was not international, the second List A game between Netherlands and Zimbabwe at The Hague saw a controversial catch on Thursday (June 22).
When Netherlands were chosen to bat, openers Wesley Barresi and Stephan Myburgh gave the hosts a great start adding 143 runs in 23 overs. Myburgh scored a brisk 70-ball 77 with 13 fours and a six.
In the last ball of the 23rd over, Myburgh lofted Zimbabwe captain Graeme Creame towards long-on. Ryan Burl was the man standing at the boundary. He juggled up and threw the ball in the air to claim a catch on the boundary line.
Images showed that Burl was standing on the rope. There were no television replays and Burl was claiming it as a legal catch. So, Myburgh had nothing to do but to leave.
Netherlands posted 291/6 in 50 overs. Zimbabwe's target was reduced to 229 in 37 overs. They reached their target in 36 overs with an over to go. After the match, Burl admitted his mistake on social media.
"I would like to sincerely apologise again to Stephan who I spoke to after the game, all the Netherlands players and supporters. I have seen the pictures and it clearly shows a six. At the time and speed at which it happened I was unaware whether I had released the ball in time or not. I thought at the time that I had caught it fine. I then turned around and asked the ball boy and family behind me if it was a clean catch or not to make sure and they said it was clean. I would never intentionally claim something that I did not think was out. Apologies again," he wrote.
The third List A game between the two teams was won by Netherlands by 149 runs on Saturday.
