Legendary West Indian cricketer Brian Lara has expressed strong confidence in India’s young batting prodigy Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. According to Lara, Jaiswal has the potential to excel in the challenging conditions down under and all he needs to do is back his immense talent to succeed.
Lara, speaking about Jaiswal's chances, said that while pitches in Australia may present unique challenges, the adjustment Jaiswal needs to make is more mental than technical. "Obviously, the pitches in Australia are slightly different. But if you take your mentality, and if you take that sort of strength that you have, you're going to play good cricket in any conditions," Lara remarked. He added, "I expect to see him do well. I think the adjustment is upstairs. The adjustment is the ability to back your talent in whatever conditions."
Jaiswal has already made a mark in Test cricket with his outstanding debut in 2023 against the West Indies. Since then, he has accumulated 1217 runs in just 11 Test matches, averaging an impressive 64.05, including three centuries. However, the upcoming Test series against Australia will be a different ball game, and the young southpaw will need to adapt to the tricky conditions and high-pressure situations.
Lara further highlighted the fact that Jaiswal's technical foundation is solid, and the key to success in Australia lies in his mindset. "I don’t think there’s much that he has to do technically. I just think it’s all about the mental thing. Travelling away from home and playing against Australia on their shores is a different beast," said Lara.
