The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined the opportunity to host the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024, citing monsoon season challenges and the desire to avoid hosting consecutive World Cups. The decision was revealed by Jay Shah, the BCCI Secretary, during a recent interaction with journalists in Mumbai.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had approached the BCCI, requesting India to take over the hosting duties due to ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh. The country has been facing civil unrest and protests, raising concerns about its ability to safely and effectively host the tournament, which is scheduled to begin on October 3 across two venues.

Shah confirmed at the TOI's Mumbai's office that the BCCI had been asked by the BCB to step in as hosts, but the request was declined. "They had asked the BCCI if they can host the event, but I flatly refused. We would still be in the monsoon season, and next year, we are going to host the ODI Women's World Cup. I do not want to give the impression that I want to host consecutive World Cups," Shah explained.

The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh and is expected to make a decision soon regarding the tournament’s location. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s national cricket team has traveled to Pakistan ahead of their two-match Test series starting on August 21, having been unable to practice in their home country due to the unrest.

Shah also emphasized the importance of the upcoming India-Bangladesh series, set to begin on September 19. India will host Bangladesh for two Tests and three T20Is. "We've not spoken to them [the Bangladesh authorities]. A new government has taken charge there. They might reach out to us or else I will reach out to them. The Bangladesh series is very important to us," Shah added.
