Pakistan captain Babar Azam broke the record held by former South African legend Hashim Amla to become the fastest cricketer to reach 5000 ODI runs.
Pakistan's all-format captain Babar Azam has broken another record in ODI cricket. The flamboyant batter is the fastest batter in the world to hit 5,000 ODI runs, beating the record previously held by South African legend Hashim Amla.
Babar achieved the milestone when he tossed a single in the 16th over of the inning in the fourth ODI against New Zealand on Friday, May 5 at the National Stadium in Karachi.
It took Babar just 97 innings and 99 matches to hit the incredible milestone by passing Amla, who hit the milestone in 101 innings.
Babar Azam is currently the No. 1 ODI batter according to the latest ICC rankings and has held that position for the past two years.
Hashim Amla had surpassed 5,000 runs in 101 innings. West Indian legend Sir Vivian Richards is third on the list along with Indian Virat Kohli. It took both players 114 innings to reach the milestone.
Babar's graceful stroke, impeccable timing and solid technique helped put his name in the history books. Pakistan will be hoping their star-batter can continue their sensational form in the 50-over format and help them win the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup in India.
