When Pakistan and the West Indies meet in Multan tomorrow (Wednesday), it will mark the start of a new era for Pakistani cricket as the city hosts international cricket after 14 long years.

The three One-Day Internationals are part of the Super League cycle and both sides are keen to secure crucial points to improve their chances of direct qualification for the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

The two teams go into the series with a lot of self-confidence.

Babar Azam's side defeated Aaron Finch's men 2-1 in Lahore in March in what was Pakistan's first ODI series win over Australia in 20 years. This is Pakistan's fifth Super League series. They defeated Zimbabwe, South Africa and Australia and lost to England.

It is the captain himself who is at the forefront of Pakistan's achievements. Babar, the number one batsman in the ICC-ODI Player Ranking, leads the batting charts with 902 runs at a stratospheric average of 90.20. He is the only batsman to smash five centuries in the current cycle, with Irishman Paul Stirling second best with three. The stylish hitmaker for right-handers sent exactly 100 balls in the direction of the four-way fence.

Pakistan's second-best batter in the cycle was Imam-ul-Haq, who enters the series at bottom of a scintillating Australian series in which he has batted two consecutive centuries and a brisk 89 without a shot and played an integral part in his side's historic victory. The southpaw has 598 carries at 54.36 and hit five half centuries along with the two centuries.

Fearsome pacer - Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi - are the leading wicket takers for Pakistan in the Super League with 19 scalps each. Haris' average of 28.73 is a shade better than Shaheen's 29.52.

The West Indies added 30 more points to their tally during their stopover in the Netherlands, beating the hosts 3-0 en route to Multan. Nicholas Pooran's side currently sit fourth with eight wins from 18 games.

Pakistan with six wins in 12 games is 10th with 60 points.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: “It's a really exciting moment for me to lead Pakistan in this extremely important series in Multan. Home to passionate cricket fans, Multan is a great place to be. I look forward to fans cheering the return of international cricket after a long hiatus and I'm sure they will see great cricket at the beautiful Multan Cricket Stadium.

“This is an important series for us as it contains important Super League points. The players have been trying hard to prepare for the West Indies Challenge and we are excited to win another series and collect maximum points to solidify our chances of direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup.”

West Indian captain Nicholas Pooran: "It feels good to be here. I have confidence in our guys after we did well in the Netherlands and we hope to continue our good performances here in Pakistan.

An ODI victory in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League match adds 10 points to a team's tally.
