Star all-rounder Andre Russell recently shed light on why many West Indies players are gravitating towards T20 leagues around the world instead of participating in Test cricket. Russell emphasized that a general lack of interest in red-ball cricket drives the decision, rather than financial incentives.

At 36 years old, Russell remains one of the most sought-after players in T20 cricket. Despite his prominence in the shorter format, he has played only one Test match and has participated in only 17 first-class games since his debut in 2007.

"Red-ball cricket is not my cookie, I don’t think my body will keep up with Test cricket. But those in the team at the moment are fit enough and taking on the challenge." He added, Speaking to Britain's PA News Agency

Russell pointed out that the proliferation of T20 leagues worldwide has led many players to prioritize these over Test cricket. However, he believes that young cricketers will still be eager to play in prestigious events like the World Test Championship (WTC):

"I don’t think it’s the money, I don’t think money is the issue. Based on the amount of T20 and leagues around the world, I think a lot of players are just not interested in playing Tests. As long as you can do well from contracts outside your nation I think they are going to grab that opportunity but everyone wants to play on the big stage.

"So, if the big stage comes in Test cricket, I know youngsters will be happy to play. I just don’t think it’s about money or anything like that." He concluded.
