Kolkata Knight Riders thrashed Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets to win their third title in IPL on Sunday (26th May) at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Disciplined bowling from KKR helped them wrap up SRH's innings to a below par 113 and in reply with the bat, Venkatesh Iyer's blistering 52* helped KKR chase down the total with 8 wickets in hands and over 9 overs to spare.
This is the third time Kolkata Knight Riders have won the IPL title.
Choosing to bat first, SRH had a horrid start as Mitchell Starc once again showed his greatness in knockouts. His peach of a delivery left Abhishek Sharma's stumps for cartwheeling in the first over. And then Vaibhav Arora got Head for a golden duck. Starc returned for his third over and removed Rahul Tripathi and SRH were in all sorts of trouble.
Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen all flopped on the big day. Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy all contributed to trigger the collapse in the middle overs.
Captain Cummins played a crucial knock and scored 24 off 19 deliveries to help his side take over 100 marks. Cummins top scored in the match, while Markram made 20 off 23 balls and Klaasen 16 off 17.
It was disciplined bowling from KKR which led SRH down in the final. Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets, giving away just 19 runs. While Starc did the damage in the powerplay to leave SRH stutter and he picked up two crucial top order wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi.
Harshit Rana also had two. While Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine all chipped in with one wicket apiece.
In reply, KKR started off to a flier. Cummins removed Narine but that didn’t stop KKR's carnage over SRH bowlers. Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz teared apart the SRH bowlers. Iyer was on charge from the ball one and didn’t stop his carnage. The duo - Venkatesh and Gurbaz added a 91 run stand off just 45 balls which took the game away from SRH and killed the chase. Venkatesh Iyer was unbeaten on 52* which made the chase easier for KKR. This is the third time Kolkata Knight Riders have lifted the IPL trophy.
