Sachin Tendulkar can take pride in the fact that he is the leading run-getter in the history of cricket. He scored 18,426 runs in ODIs, the most by a cricketer in the 50-over format.

Meanwhile, former England captain Alastair Cook believes that Joe Root has all the tools and ingredients to surpass Sachin's Test run tally in the years to come.

Currently, Joe Root is on a purple patch as he has been scoring runs with ease in Test cricket. The right-hander recently went past Alastair Cook's Test run tally (12,472 runs) to become England's leading run-getter in Test cricket. 

As of now, Root has 12,716 runs to his name including 35 centuries and 64 fifties at an average of 51.3. It remains to be seen how Root will go about his work in his late 30's, which will surely be a challenging phase of his cricketing venture. 

Meanwhile, during a round table appearance with the ICC, Alastair Cook is curious to see how far Root can go in Tests and he hopes Root can go all the way to break Sachin's record. Root, who is the fifth leading run-getter in Tests, is 3205 runs short of Sachin's overall Test tally.

"I think Joe Root could set a mark, certainly on an English side, that'll be very hard to beat. But you just never know. I hope he can get very close, if not be the first person who scores 16,000 Test runs. It'd be a great achievement," Alastair Cook said.
