England’s T20 World Cup journey started by defeating Afghanistan. They lost their next match against Ireland. England's semi-final was in jeopardy when the match against Australia was washed out by rain. After winning four consecutive matches from there, they are now T20 world champions. Taking the trophy in front of the captain Jos Buttler said, they deserve it.
England beat Pakistan by 5 wickets in the final match in front of more than 80,000 spectators at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday.
At the press conference after the match, England captain Butler spoke about his pride in the team.
“It is (the icing on the cake). To win the T20 World Cup now, immensely proud of everyone here. It has been a long journey and few changes but we are reaping the rewards of how we have played in the last few years. It's been a fantastic tournament,” he said.
Buttler took over the captaincy in white-ball cricket after the retirement of Eoin Morgan last June. England did not get off to a good start under him. They failed to win the series at home against India and South Africa in both editions.
But it didn't take long for the team to return to good form. Last September, after almost 17 years, England won the seven-match T20I series 4-3 after visiting Pakistan. Buttler could not play a single match of that series due to injury. But he was with the team.
According to the England captain, the understanding they developed during the tour of Pakistan was what carried the team forward in the bilateral series against Australia and the World Cup later on.
“We went to Pakistan before coming here, which was a valuable time for the group and this felt a long way after the Ireland match but the character we showed from thereon in must-win games is amazing,” he added.
