South Africa’s youngest Test debutant, Kwena Maphaka, etched his name into the history books by claiming his first-ever Test wicket during the ongoing match against Pakistan. The 18-year-old pacer dismissed Pakistan’s captain and star batter, Babar Azam, breaking a crucial 98-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Babar and Mohammad Rizwan.
Babar Azam, after completing his first half-century of 2025, fell victim to Maphaka on the 5th ball of the 35th over. Maphaka, bowling a loose delivery down the leg side at 140 kmph, saw Babar attempt a flick but only managed a faint edge. South Africa’s wicketkeeper, Kyle Verreynne, dived low to take a sharp catch, handing the young seamer his maiden Test wicket.

At the time, Pakistan was 118/4, with Babar walking back for a well-compiled 58. Maphaka’s breakthrough shifted momentum in South Africa’s favor as Pakistan found themselves struggling at 155/6 at lunch.
Notably, this was not the first time Maphaka had dismissed Babar Azam. The young left-arm pacer, who made his ODI debut in the recently concluded series against Pakistan, had also taken Babar’s wicket in the 50-over format. To make the achievement even more remarkable, Maphaka has now dismissed Babar in all three formats of the game, having also removed him in T20Is.
By achieving this feat, Kwena Maphaka became the youngest player in South African cricket history to take a Test wicket and joined an elite group of bowlers who have managed to dismiss Babar Azam across all formats.
