Wanindu Hasaranga, currently the number one all-rounder in T20I rankings, has reportedly resigned from his role as captain of Sri Lanka's T20I team. This decision comes in the wake of Sri Lanka's unsuccessful campaign at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Sri Lanka's performance in the T20 World Cup was below expectations, with the team failing to advance past the group stages. They managed only one victory, against the Netherlands, and suffered defeats at the hands of Bangladesh and South Africa. Additionally, their match against Nepal was washed out due to bad weather.

In his resignation letter, Hasaranga stated that stepping down from the captaincy was in the best interest of Sri Lanka Cricket, allowing him to focus on his role as a player. “Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” he said.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), while accepting his resignation, emphasized that Hasaranga will remain a pivotal player in the nation’s international cricketing strategies.

Looking ahead, the Sri Lanka team is set to take on India in a home white-ball bilateral series, beginning July 26. They are yet to name their squad and skipper for the series.

Sri Lanka will host India for three T20Is and as many ODIs. The T20I series will kickstart the India tour of Sri Lanka 2024. According to the itinerary released by SLC, India will arrive in Sri Lanka on July 22, with the T20I series set to get underway on July 26.
