After suffering three straight home losses marked by lackluster batting performances, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally broke the trend by putting up a total of over 200 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, paving the way for a thrilling victory over Rajasthan Royals (RR). Top-scorer Virat Kohli, who made 70, revealed that the batting unit had discussed necessary changes, and on Thursday, they successfully applied those ideas to discover a formula that delivered results.
"We've had three pretty average games at home and we discussed a few things in the batting unit that we need to get right and I think we applied ourselves well enough today to get that total on the board," Kohli told the host broadcaster after RCB's first home win of IPL 2025. "We felt like the pitch wasn't as flat as the score displayed on the scoreboard."
Unlike their previous three home matches, where they lost at least three wickets during the powerplay while trying to attack the bowlers, RCB managed to get through the first six overs against RR without losing a wicket. After Phil Salt was dismissed in the seventh over, Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal stitched together a 95-run partnership, laying the foundation for a strong finish.
"I think the template is simple, you know, one of the guys to kind of bat through and the others to kind of attack around him," Kohli said. "So I have that responsibility. I know this pitch very well, so does Devdutt. So yeah, that was basically the plan. Let Salty do his thing and then once we have a couple of wickets down, then really capitalise and rebuild and yeah, today it paid off."
