The "timed out" dismissal of Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews continues to be the subject of heated controversy. Umpire Richard Illingworth addressed the situation this time around. He said that he had forewarned Mathews about the helmet issue.
There are two camps of opinion on this topic. Some have cited the "spirit of cricket," while others have said that Shakib has done the right thing by following the rules. Many people agreed with Shakib since his action was legal.
A fourth official ruled the situation over as well. But seasoned Mathews kept going to illustrate his point. He shared a video on YouTube and other platforms.
However, according to recent reports, umpire Illingworth had already issued a time warning to Mathews. The widely read ESPNcricinfo website said as much.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Mathews entered the field 1 minute and 10 seconds after Sadeera Samarawickrama was dismissed. After entering the field, he also spoke to Charith Asalanka in the crease. That's when the umpire warned Mathews that there was only 30 seconds left to tackle the next ball.
As soon as he went to tackle the ball, the Lankan stepped away from the crease and pointed to the dugout for the helmet. Mathews took more than 2 minutes to change his helmet.
That's why Shakib applied for out. However, when he changed his helmet, the two umpires on the field declared him out and asked him to leave the field. However, this experienced Sri Lankan cricketer did not take it well.
