The preparation programme was not carried out as planned: Chief curator of T20 WC regarding Afghanistan-South Africa semi-final

South Africa thrashed Afghanistan by 9 wickets at Brian Lara Cricket Stadium, Trinidad in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024. Proteas dismantled Afghanistan for a paltry 56 runs earlier on. In reply, South Africa chased down the target easily and made the final of any Cricket World Cup for the very first time but lost the final against India by 7 runs.

Chief curator Kent Crawfton of the recently-finished ICC T20 World Cup acknowledged that the pitch preparation for the first semi-final match between South Africa and Afghanistan went wrong.

"The intention was to produce good cricket pitches, with something in there for bowlers to work with," Kent Crawfton, who was in charge of the pitches during the tournament's Caribbean leg, told Cricbuzz.

"The first semi-final pitch ended up being too one-sided. The preparation programme was not carried out as planned. Thus, it became a cracked surface causing too much variation in pace, bounce, and sideways movement," he added.

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott criticized the pitch after the match. “I don't want to get myself into trouble and I don't want to come across as bitter or it being a case of sour grapes but that's not the pitch that you want to have a match, a semi-final of a World Cup on, plain and simple. It should be a fair contest. I'm not saying it should be flat completely with no spin and no seam movement, I'm saying you shouldn't have batsmen worrying about going forward,” he said.
