Tamim Iqbal, the former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, has once again shown his generosity, this time by offering financial support to the family of late Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman, a renowned figure in Bangladesh chess. Known for his quiet dedication to the sport, Ziaur Rahman’s life ended tragically on the chessboard during a game on July 5. The 50-year-old chess icon, engaged in a match with fellow Grandmaster Enamul Rajib, collapsed unexpectedly from a heart attack at Dhaka’s Chess Federation, passing away soon after.

Following Ziaur Rahman’s untimely passing, his family faced immediate financial hardships. In a compassionate gesture, Tamim Iqbal stepped forward to aid them, meeting Ziaur’s widow and son at Mirpur Stadium and presenting them with a check for 500,000 BDT. Tamim’s generosity went beyond financial help, as he also encouraged Ziaur’s son, Tahsin, to focus on both his studies and chess, reassuring the family that he would continue to support them as needed.

Tamim’s heartfelt message deeply moved Ziaur’s wife, Labonno, who said, “Tamim told me to reach out to him for any problem. He advised my son to continue his studies and sports. He said to Tahsin, ‘I am giving you five lakhs; it’s nothing compared to what your father did.’ Tamim’s words and actions truly touched us; he is a wonderful person.”

In addition to Tamim’s contribution, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also pledged to assist Ziaur’s family. BCB has encouraged the family to submit an official application for further support, promising special consideration for Tahsin’s future in chess.
