Sri Lankan cricket is in big trouble. The team could not directly qualify for the World Cup. They qualified by playing the qualifiers, but they passed an unforgettable tournament. Finishing the World Cup at no. 9 out of 10 teams, they are also knocked out of the Champions Trophy 2025. Again, ICC has suspended the country's cricket board. Former Sri Lanka cricketer Arjuna Ranatunga blames BCCI secretary Jay Shah for the woes of Lankan cricket.

Sri Lanka won the ODI World Cup in 1996. Arjuna Ranatunga was the captain of that team. Kumar Sangakkara's team played the final in the last World Cup held in India in 2011. But Sri Lanka did not even qualify for the 2023 World Cup. Dasun Shanaka's team qualified for the World Cup by playing the qualifiers in the same tournament with teams like Nepal and Oman.

Sri Lanka showed glimpses in the Asia Cup. However, the World Cup has been a complete disaster. Sri Lanka also failed to participate in the Champions Trophy. Because the best 8 teams of the World Cup will play the Champions Trophy. And Sri Lanka's position in the points table is 9th. Then a bigger blow struck Lankan cricket. Lankan Sports Minister bans Sri Lanka Cricket Board due to corruption. The ICC has suspended the Sri Lanka Cricket Board due to government interference.

Ranatunga opened his mouth in this predicament. In an interview given to the Lankan media  Daily Mirror,  he pointed the finger of accusation at Jay Shah.

Ranatunga said,  “Because of the connection between SLC officials and Jay Shah they (the BCCI) are under the impression that they can trample and control SLC. Jay Shah is running Sri Lanka Cricket. SLC is being ruined because of pressure from Jay Shah. One man in India is ruining Sri Lankan cricket. He is only powerful because of his father, who is India’s home Minister.”
