The cricketing world is abuzz with Sam Konstas, the young Australian batter who dismantled Jasprit Bumrah with audacious shots, leaving fans stunned. Behind this fearless batter is his coach, Tahmid Islam, who saw the spark in Konstas long before the world took notice.
Konstas’ breathtaking performance in the Boxing Day Test, where he scored a brilliant 60, showcased his fearless batting approach. According to Tahmid, this boldness is what defines Konstas, and it didn’t surprise him one bit.
On Saturday, December 28, Tahmid Islam, in an online session organized by Prime Bank Cricket Club, shared insights about his star pupil. He revealed how Konstas’ audacious batting plan was already in place even before he took the field against India.
“During dinner the night before, Sam said he’d play a scoop shot after reaching 150. He wasn’t planning to execute it so soon, but that’s Sam—he bats with complete freedom, unbothered by criticism if things go wrong,” Tahmid said.
This freedom, Tahmid believes, is what sharpens Konstas’ batting edge. His 60-run knock in Melbourne during the Boxing Day Test was a testament to the modern cricketing mindset—fearless and innovative.
Tahmid also shared how Konstas’ fearless approach caught India off-guard. “They weren’t expecting a 19-year-old to bat with such freedom. It shook their plans,” he remarked, adding that Konstas thrives under pressure and brings a T20-like flair to Test cricket.
Even before his Test debut, Konstas had impressed selectors with his attacking style during a warm-up match against the Indian XI. Tahmid had always known that his pupil was destined for greatness.
“When he was just 14, I could see he was a long-term prospect. India might be surprised now, but I’m not,” Tahmid added.
Tahmid sees Konstas as a future member of cricket’s elite "Fab Four," bringing an explosive and fearless approach even to Test cricket. The coach fondly recalled how Konstas, before walking out to bat, asked him, “Coach, how would you like me to celebrate my century?”
With his ability to challenge world-class bowlers like Bumrah and his fearless attitude, Konstas is set to redefine Test cricket for Australia.
