The increasing rate of concussion in the field encouraged researchers to develop measurements for detecting the extent of damage in the field. The under-researched device uses optical fibers to deliver pulses of infrared light to the athlete's forehead. Without any harm, this light can penetrate through the skin and skull to the brain without doing harm, interacting with an important molecule for metabolism called cytochrome C oxidase, or CCO. Meanwhile this news device will provide information about whether the brain cells are able to use the oxygen that is taken by the injured person. This technology will eventually diagnose concussion on the sidelines of the game.

"We think it can,” says co-author Rachel Russo. “We would have to adjust the depth of the measurement, but we may be able to observe other organs at risk of failure – for example, the heart, lungs or kidneys.”
