Shamarh Brooks Career, Biography & More
Shamarh Shaqad Joshua Brooksborn 1 October 1988 is a Barbadian international cricketer who plays international cricket for the West Indies and national cricket for Barbados.
He is a right-handed hitter who throws the occasional leg spin and primarily plays as a batter. He made his international debut for the West Indies in August 2019.
Early and Domestic Career
Brooks was considered a cricket prodigy in his teenage years. He played for the West Indies Under-19 cricket team at the 2006 World Under-19 Championship, made his top-flight cricket debut for Barbados in 2007 and captained the West Indies at the 2008 World Under-19 Championship. He remained with the Barbados national team for several years but never lived up to his full potential and was dropped from the national team after a particularly poor year in 2012 in which he scored just 76 runs at an 8.44 average .
Brooks didn't play another top game until 2015, but right after his return he scored his first top-class Century against the Windward Islands. Over the next five years, he hit 3,091 runs with an average of 38.63, including five centuries and 20 half-centuries.
Brooks began making strides towards Test cricket by officiating unofficial Test matches for the West Indies second team, West Indies A, from 2016. This culminated in the West Indies A series against India A in England in 2018 where he scored 91 points in game one and 121 not in game two to finish as the series' top run scorer.
T20 Franchise Cricket
Brooks played for the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots for two seasons in 2016 and 2017 in the Caribbean Premier League, the premier Twenty20 league in the West Indies. He played four games each season and averaged 119 runs in both games for a 23.80 batting average of 120.20.
International Career
In January 2019, Brooks was called up to the West Indies' Test squad for their series against England as a reward for his excellent form,| but he did not play. He then captained the West Indies A in another series against India A in July and August 2019. He was originally only scheduled to referee the final of three unofficial Test matches, with Kraigg Brathwaite captaining the first two, but after He also filled in as captain for the first two games following Brathwaite's injury. Brooks led in the first two games by half a century from the front. He was then called up again to the West Indies Test squad, this time for their series against India.
Brooks made his Test debut for the West Indies against India on August 22, 2019. In November 2019, Brooks scored his first century in Test cricket with 111 runs in a one-off Test against Afghanistan.
In June 2020, Brooks was called up to the West Indies Test squad for their run against England. The testing series was originally scheduled to begin in May 2020 but was postponed to July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In November 2021, Brooks was called up to the West Indies' One Day International (ODI) squad for the series against Pakistan. He made his Twenty20 International (T20I) debut on December 13, 2021 for the West Indies against Pakistan.
In December 2021 he was called up to the West Indies' ODI squad for their series against Ireland. He made his ODI debut for the West Indies against Ireland on January 8, 2022.
On 4 June 2022, in the third and final game of the series against the Netherlands, Brooks scored his first century in ODI cricket, failing 101.
In December 2022, Brooks replaced Nkrumah Bonner as a substitute due to a concussion on day three of the inaugural Test of West Indies tour of Australia.
