Benny Alexander Cameron Howell (born 5 October 1988) is a first-class English cricketer. Howell is a right-handed hitter who shoots at medium speed with his right arm. Born in Bordeaux, France, he was educated at the Oratory School in Oxfordshire.
Hampshire County Cricket Club
After spending several seasons in the Hampshire Second XI, Howell made his first team debut for Hampshire against Leicestershire in a List A match at the Clydesdale Bank 40 in August 2010. His second List A match came in the second leg at Grace Road , Leicester, instead of . Hampshire won the Friends Provident t20 in 2010, although Howell did not compete. This would normally have qualified Hampshire and runners-up Somerset for a place in the 2010 Twenty20 Champions League. However, the tournament collided with the end of the English domestic season, leaving Hampshire unable to participate. Instead, Hampshire was granted a spot alongside Somerset in the 2011 Caribbean Twenty20. It was in that tournament that Howell made his Twenty20 debut during Hampshire's group game against Canada. He played all of Hampshire's games in the tournament, including the final against Trinidad and Tobago, which Hampshire lost.
In the 2011 English season, Howell became a regular feature in Hampshire's CCC limited overs squads, mainly in List A cricket, although he also appeared in just under half of Hampshire's group games in Friends Provident t20 2011. He got off to a quiet start in Hampshire's first game of the 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40 against Surrey, but in the following game of the competition he hit his first half century, scoring 66 runs. Two games later he scored his first century against Surrey at The Oval, turning 113 balls into a quick 122. Howell finished the one-day season as Hampshire's top scorer. Immediately after that game he made his first-class debut against Lancashire in the County Championship at the Rose Bowl. Howell continued his fine form from the previous limited overs game by scoring 71 in the second innings at Hampshire County Cricket Club after being forced to follow up on the first innings in which Howell was due to a three-ball duck of Kyle Hogg was fired. This was his only first-class appearance that season. Hampshire's season was marked by struggles, after his good form Howell's season flattened out. He made just another half-century in the Clydesdale Bank 40 against Northamptonshire, while his handful of Twenty20 appearances brought him limited success.
Following the 2011 season, Howell announced in November that he was looking for opportunities outside of Hampshire and expressed an interest in finding a county where he was promised regular Four Day cricket appearances. During the English winter he played cricket in Melbourne, Australia, close to where his parents live, for Essendon Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League. He decided to leave Hampshire in January 2012.
Gloucestershire CCC
He moved to Gloucestershire at the start of the 2012 season and was called up for his debut in a first-class match against Kent in the County Championship after making a double hundred for the 2 two days before his call-up. He has made a strong start to Gloucestershire's CB40 campaign with 72 (51) points against the Netherlands and 45* (48) against Middlesex and 89 (93) against Northants. In July 2012 he signed a two-year deal with Gloucestershire for his impressive performances during the club's trial period.
Howell signed a two-year contract extension on 15 October 2013, having played in all of Gloucestershire's County Championship matches and most of their limited-duration matches.
Howell continues to be a key player and Gloucestershire with his key role as the club's main all-rounder. Howell married in early July 2015 and has been in lofty form since tying the knot in Gloucestershire. He was the first player for Gloucestershire to have a double wicket maiden in a T20 match. He achieved this feat against his ex-club Hampshire County Cricket Club, where he also scored the winning streak and was man of the match. Hampshire have tried to re-sign Howell but at the end of July he extended his contract with Gloucestershire for a further 2 years. Howell also made his first first-class 100 game against Leicestershire at Cheltenham after tying the knot.
On September 6, 2015, Howell helped his side beat the Yorkshire Vikings in the semi-finals of the Royal London One Day Cup with a strong bowling performance. (3-37) . Gloucestershire won the Royal One Day Cup final, beating a strong Surrey side by 7 runs. This was one of the closest finals in the history of the competition
In 2016, Benny Howell was the leading wicket taker in the Natwest T20 Blast. He was rewarded with the signing of a new 3-year contract with Gloucestershire. His consistent performances in T20 have attracted the attention of some major T20 competitions. In October 2018, he was called up to the Rangpur Riders squad following the draft for the 2018–19 Bangladesh Premier League.
In 2019 he signed a three-year contract extension with Gloucestershire.
His skills are so great that he claims to have 50 different types of slower balls. He developed them by watching baseball pitchers and practices them with his dog in his back yard.
Howell has spoken about his experience with ADHD and how medication has helped him live with the condition. He said that at school he was "always known as the 'strange kid' ... I was always in trouble. Exploring where I shouldn't be doing research, making noise in class, running down the corridor...' He says exercise was an escape.

Benny Howell BPL During the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League, Howell impressed with his stingy bowling performances, with his subtle variations fitting very well with the slower Bangladeshi wickets. In his 8 matches he took 6 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 5.64. His contributions weren't just limited to the ball, with a crucial 53* of 28 (with 5 sixes) showing his skill with the racquet. This was made no less significant by the fact that three greats of the format appeared in the opposing bowling attack in Thisara Perera, Wahab Riaz and Shahid Afridi. His performances were so good that AB de Villiers encouraged him to take part in the 2020 IPL auction. However, it remained unsold. He was selected again for the Bangladesh Premier League, this time by the Chattogram Challengers in the 2022 season.
Benny Howell the Hundred Howell was selected for Birmingham Phoenix for the inaugural season of The Hundred, where he impressed as his side reached the final. With eleven wickets at an average of 18.54, he was named in a number of teams of the tournament.
