The inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League 2024 commenced in style on Saturday, August 17, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The opening ceremony, a star-studded affair, featured dazzling performances by actress Sonam Bajwa and singer Badshah. Amid the vibrant atmosphere, the Delhi Premier League (DPL) was officially declared open by Rohan Jaitley, president of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA).

The event saw the attendance of DDCA's top management, franchise team owners, players, and supporting staff from all the participating men’s and women’s teams. Adding to the spectacle, Indian cricket star Rishabh Pant was felicitated by the DDCA president and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla. Pant was honored for his significant contribution to India’s victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign in the USA and West Indies.

Pant, captaining the Purani Dilli 6 team, faced off against South Delhi Superstarz in the tournament opener. Despite the grand welcome and recent accolades, Pant struggled to find form, scoring 35 runs from 32 balls at a strike rate of 109. This follows a period of inconsistent performances, as he made his return to international cricket during the T20 World Cup after recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022.

The DPL 2024 will feature 40 matches, including 33 men’s and 7 women’s games, all held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium from August 17 to September 8, 2024. With Purani Dilli 6 scheduled to play 10 matches till September 2, it remains uncertain if Pant will participate in all fixtures, especially with a potential return to Test cricket looming. Pant is expected to compete for the wicketkeeper-batter spot in India’s Test team for the upcoming series against Bangladesh.

Speaking ahead of the DPL opener, Pant highlighted the significance of the league for young cricketers seeking recognition. "The Delhi Premier League is a great opportunity for players who haven’t made it to the IPL. Performing here could open doors for them," Pant stated, expressing his excitement to play in front of his home crowd.

Pant’s participation in the DPL marks a crucial phase in his comeback journey, as he gears up for the Duleep Trophy in September—a tournament that could determine his place in the Indian Test squad. With competition from KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Dhurv Jurel for the wicketkeeping role, Pant’s performances in the DPL and Duleep Trophy will be closely watched.
