Pant breaks down Gambhir's aggression vs Dravid’s composure in coaching

Dravid's tenure as India’s head coach saw multiple ICC finals, including a heartbreaking loss in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship. However, Dravid capped off his coaching career on a high, leading India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, finally breaking the country’s ICC trophy drought.

As India prepare for the much-anticipated two-Test series against Bangladesh in September, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant shed light on the contrasting coaching styles of current head coach Gautam Gambhir and his predecessor Rahul Dravid. Pant, who is eager to return to the Test side after a two-year absence, shared his insights ahead of the Duleep Trophy 2024, where he represents India B.

Speaking to JioCinema, Pant discussed his experiences working with both Dravid and Gambhir, having played under both coaches in different formats and tournaments. He praised Dravid for maintaining a calm and balanced demeanor, which helped the team stay grounded through the highs and lows of international cricket. "I feel Rahul bhai was very balanced as a human being and as a coach. There are positives and negatives, and it depends on where individuals choose to focus," Pant said.

In contrast, Pant noted that Gambhir, who took over as head coach in July 2024, brings a more aggressive and single-minded approach to the role. "Gauti bhai is more aggressive, he's very one-sided about the fact that you have to win," Pant remarked. Gambhir’s tenure began positively with a 3-0 sweep over Sri Lanka in a T20I series, though the team faced challenges in the subsequent ODI series.

Pant, who was part of the Sri Lanka tour, spoke about the need to strike a balance between Gambhir’s aggressive tactics and maintaining composure during tough moments. "But you need to find the right balance and improve. That’s the beauty of international cricket—you keep evolving," he added.

Pant is expected to return to the Test squad for the upcoming series against Bangladesh, who recently achieved a historic 2-0 series win over Pakistan. However, competition for the wicketkeeper-batter slot is stiff, as young Dhruv Jurel impressed during India’s last Test series against England. Pant will be looking to solidify his spot as India prepares for another tough series at home.

With Gambhir leading the charge and Pant’s return looming, India will be focused on maintaining their high standards and building on their recent successes. Pant emphasized that India will not underestimate their Asian rivals. "Teams like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka thrive in their home conditions, but as the Indian cricket team, we focus solely on our own standards and continuous improvement," he stated.
