New Zealand will face Afghanistan in the 16th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Wednesday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The 16th match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup brings New Zealand and Afghanistan together for a day-night clash in Chennai on Wednesday afternoon. New Zealand has made an excellent start to the tournament so far with convincing victories over England, the Netherlands and Bangladesh. Afghanistan were beaten by Bangladesh and India in their first two games before pulling off one of the biggest World Cup upsets of all time with a 69-run lead against 2019 winners England on Sunday. The match will begin at 2:00 pm local time at MA Chidambaram, Chepauk.
New Zealand reached the final in 2019 before losing on the boundary countback after a draw and a super over decider. They have made a great start to this season with three wins out of three and are likely to be too strong for Afghanistan with both bat and ball.
Afghanistan had won just one Cricket World Cup match before their famous victory over England on Sunday, a one-wicket win over Scotland in 2015. Although the team will go into this clash full of confidence, they will need another top performance to be to be competitive against New Zealand.
Match Preview
New Zealand will face Afghanistan in the 16th match of the ODI Cricket World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on October 18. New Zealand have dominated the game so far, winning both games and are in second place, while Afghanistan have won one out of three games so far and are in sixth place in the rankings.
New Zealand played in their last game against Bangladesh where New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl. Bangladesh didn't get off to a good start and lost their first wicket on the first ball. It was the experienced duo of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan who scored important runs after the top-order failed. They could only register 245 runs on the board. New Zealand also lost an early wicket but had two brilliant partnerships in a row to comfortably come out on top and win the game by eight wickets.
Afghanistan faced England in their final game, with England winning the toss and electing to field. Afghanistan got off to a fantastic start with Gurbaz dominating proceedings with his knock of 80. They pretty much lost their bearings in the middle overs but finished well towards the end and ended up with 284 runs on the board. England didn't start the way they would have liked as they lost their first wicket early and just kept suffering defeat after defeat. The inability to form partnerships resulted in them losing the match by 69 runs.

Toss Prediction
In the last two ODIs at this venue, the team that came second won the match and we expect both teams to want to field first in this clash.
Weather Report
Chennai will see a combination of clouds and sunny spells in the afternoon before clear skies later in the evening. The temperature will not fall below 27 degrees.
Match Prediction
Before Afghanistan shocked England on Sunday, most commentators would have expected New Zealand to easily compete in this game. However, with conditions in Chennai likely to suit some of Afghanistan's bowling attack, we could well see another interesting game. Player for player, and even without Tim Southee and Trent Boult, New Zealand have much more experience at the top level and are in stronger form than Afghanistan. Overall, we expect the young Afghanistan team to cause some concern for the Black Caps, but our prediction is that New Zealand will win again and win the tournament for the fourth year in a row.
