The NCL T20 2024 has kicked off with thrilling matches, highlighting outstanding performances and dramatic endings. While Rajshahi Division claimed a rain-affected victory over Khulna, Rangpur showcased dominance against Chattogram in a one-sided affair.

Rajshahi’s Dramatic Win Against Khulna

Rajshahi Division started their NCL T20 campaign with a victory over Khulna Division in a match that ended early due to insufficient light at the floodlight-less Sylhet Academy Ground. Chasing a target of 173, Rajshahi needed 19 runs from 16 balls with seven wickets in hand when the match was halted. Using the Duckworth-Lewis method, Rajshahi was declared the winner by 11 runs.

Khulna batted first, posting 172/7 in their 20 overs. Young sensation and U19 Asia Cup-winning captain Azizul Hakim Tamim impressed with a 31-ball 53, while Amit Majumder and Tamim contributed a 77-run stand after opener Anamul Haque Bijoy fell for a golden duck. Skipper Nurul Hasan Sohan scored a steady 37 off 26, and a late cameo by death-over specialist Mushtafizur Rahman added 35* off 15 balls.

In response, Rajshahi's openers laid a solid foundation with an 89-run partnership. Habibur Rahman Sohan smashed 66 off 38, hitting eight fours and four sixes. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Pritom Kumar (30*) ensured stability. With the light fading, the thrilling chase concluded prematurely, but Rajshahi walked away with a well-earned win.

Rangpur Dominate Chattogram in One-Sided Opener

Star-studded Chattogram Division, featuring national players like Tamim Iqbal, suffered a crushing defeat to Rangpur Division in their opening match. Despite having the likes of Tamim and Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Chattogram managed a subpar 132/9 in 20 overs.

Returning to the field after a hiatus, Tamim scored a modest 13 off 10 balls, including one four and one six, before being dismissed. Mahmudul Hasan Joy added 14 off 12, while Mominul Haque’s 27 off 21 provided some stability. However, Rangpur’s Mukidul Islam wreaked havoc with three wickets, supported by Alauddin Babu’s two.

Rangpur chased the target comfortably with 19 balls to spare, despite losing five wickets. Naim Islam (24 off 12) and Tanbir Hayder (41 off 37) laid a strong foundation, while captain Akbar Ali (25) and unbeaten contributions from Arif Hossain (12*) and Alauddin Babu (10*) sealed the victory. Hasan Murad was the standout bowler for Chattogram, claiming two wickets.
