Representing one’s country in Test cricket is a monumental achievement, and for Mehidy Hasan Miraz, his 50th Test match holds even greater significance. Not only is it a personal milestone, but it also marks his debut as Bangladesh's Test captain, filling in for injured regular skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto.
The landmark Test against the West Indies, set to take place in Antigua, is an opportunity Miraz hopes to make memorable. Speaking ahead of the match, he shared his excitement and determination to lead from the front.
Expressing gratitude, Miraz stated: "Alhamdulillah, it feels incredible. Representing my country in 50 Test matches is a huge achievement for me and for Bangladesh. I hope to make this milestone memorable."
Bangladesh’s recent record in the West Indies has been far from ideal, with no Test victories in the region over the past four years. Miraz is determined to reverse the trend.
"Our goal is to play good cricket. We haven’t won a Test here in the last four years. This time, our aim is to win the match and ensure everyone contributes," he said.
Antigua hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for Bangladesh, with disappointing performances in the past. However, Miraz believes the team is better prepared this time.
"We didn’t play well in Antigua before; we lost badly. But this time, we’ve come with a fresh mindset. We’ve practiced here for about 10 days and played a practice match. The players are well-prepared, and I’m optimistic about the team’s performance. If we play as a unit, good results will follow."
Miraz’s leadership will be crucial as Bangladesh seeks to turn over a new leaf in West Indian conditions.
