They chose to bat first in a Port of Spain pitch, which turned out to be not so easy to bat on. Bangladesh bowlers had to bowl against the likes of Virendar Sehwag, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. It would be a tough challenge, no doubt about that. Mashrafe Mortaza struck with the score on 6, with a brilliant in swinger that took the inside edge of the bat of Sehwag and crashed into the stumps. Robin Uthappa followed Sehwag quickly, and Sachin fell with the score on 40, courtesy a beautiful delivery by Abdur Razzak and a good catch by Mushfiqur Rahim behind the stumps. After Dravid fell, Yuvraj (47) and Ganguly (66) had built up a good partnership. Yuvraj in particular was very agressive against the spinners. This was followed by a spectacular collapse of 5 wickets for just a couple of runs. Some late hitting by Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel took India to 191. Mashrafe Mortaza took 4-38, while Abdur Razzak and Mohammad Rafique picked up three wickets apiece. Syed Rasel bowled brilliantly despite not picking up a wicket, getting the ball to move and conceding just 31 in 10 tight overs. In reply, Bangladesh lost in form opener Shahriar Nafees early. However 17 year old Tamim Iqbal, who was little known at that time, set about smacking the Indian pacers all around the park. One highlight of his audacity was the way he came down the track against a fired up Zaheer Khan and smacked his bouncer for a huge six over long on. That gave the Indian bowlers the message that Bangladesh was not to lose that day. After Tamim departed for a 55 ball 51, Shakib al Hasan kept control of the chase with a composed 53. Mushfiqur Rahim played his part with an unbeaten 56 to anchor the chase and finish off the game. The Tigers had won by 5 wickets, the Indian dreams of winning had fallen apart. Mashrafe Mortaza was the man of the match for his great bowling. He dedicated his performance to best friend and Bangladesh cricketer Manzarul Islam Rana, who had died of a tragic road accident the day before. The whole Bangladesh side seemed to turn the mourning into strength with their body language. It was also the first time the world took notice of the fantastic trio of Shakib al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim. These three would be the key players of Bangladesh in the years to follow, and 8 years later, they carry our dreams to win.
