Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood hopes he will be fit enough to return for the third Border Gavaskar Trophy Test against India on Saturday.

Josh Hazlewood bowled at near-top speed at the Adelaide Oval today during a detailed scan into his recovery from a side strain, but admits it will be another 24 hours before he can fully assess his availability for the upcoming third Test.

Battling a side strain, Hazlewood had to watch from the sidelines as Australia claimed an impressive 10-wicket triumph in Adelaide to level the five-match series against India 1-1 and boost their chances of reaching next year's ICC World Test Championship final.

"That's how I'm going to perform in the next 24 hours," Hazelwood said.

"It's about cooling down pretty much completely and then carrying on the same day, and the intensity has to be just right as well."

"So there are a few boxes to tick, but probably it's the 24 hours afterward and coming back up the next day and then thinking, 'Yeah, I'd have the right to go again if I had to.'"

Should Hazlewood indeed return to Australia's playing XI, it could mean making way for Scott Boland, although the fast bowler made a solid contribution in Adelaide, taking five wickets in the two innings.

In Boland's first Test since July 2023, the 35-year-old finished with match figures of 5-105, fitting seamlessly back into the pace attack alongside captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc.

"I think if this [Adelaide] had been the last Test of the summer, I could have potentially run the gauntlet and played," Hazlewood said.

"I think I would have been in a pretty bad state at the end of the game. Even though it was a short game, it just wasn't quite right.

"The team has obviously been a problem area for me in the past... so I'm safe. "Obviously we've got Scotty there who does a fantastic job every time he plays. "Sometimes you have to be practically 100 per cent to be able to play."

The third Test begins at the Gabba on Saturday.
