Hobart Hurricanes' cricketer, veteran Johan Botha has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket effective immediately.

Johan Botha retires from all forms of cricket

Citing reasons behind the decision, Botha said, "wear and tear on his body and sheer physical fatigue,” is the cause of his sudden retirement. The 36-year-old Botha turning off to be off spinner to become a medium-pacer earlier when his action came under scrutiny, played five Tests, 78 ODIs and 40 T20Is for South Africa between November 2005 and October 201. He played his last international match in 2012 in a World T20 game. Botha also played an amazing 215 domestic T20 matches across 15 years since his 2004 debut in South Africa. Botha also captained South Africa in 21 matches - ODIs and T20Is combined. Under his leadership, South Africa won eight ODIs and as many T20Is. He moved to Australia to play for South Australia, captained the Redbacks in Australian domestic cricket and became an Australian citizen in 2016. He also played for the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers in the BBL before moving to the Hurricanes this season.

“It was tough, you never want these things to end,” Botha said said.

“The gaps between seasons have become really long for me, 10 months I felt was really long. “I just feel like the position the team’s in at the moment … I just feel like it’s a good time to open that No.8 spot up with four games to go until the play-offs. And not wait until then by hanging on and hanging on and then … think ‘this is too much’. “It’s better to move aside and let the next player come in," he added.
