India wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan is set to mark his return to domestic red-ball cricket, being named among the 61 players selected for the 2024 Duleep Trophy. This decision by the BCCI's selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, has sparked discussions about Kishan's potential return to the Indian Test squad ahead of the crucial two-match series against Bangladesh.

The tournament, scheduled between September 5 and 24 in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, and M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, could play a vital role in determining the final squad for the Bangladesh series.

Kishan, who last represented India in December 2023 before taking a mental-health break ahead of the Test series in South Africa, has not been part of the national setup since. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah did not mince words when addressing Kishan's possible return to the Indian squad. In a statement to the Times of India, Shah said, "He will have to follow the rules. He will have to play domestic cricket." This message underscores the BCCI's emphasis on the importance of domestic performances for national selection.

Ahead of the Duleep Trophy, Kishan has already made his presence felt in the ongoing Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament, where he is captaining the Jharkhand Cricket Association. Kishan's return to form was evident on Friday, as he smashed an 86-ball century, eventually scoring 114 runs against Madhya Pradesh. His explosive knock, featuring nine sixes, showcased his intent to make a strong case for his return to the national side.

With the Duleep Trophy serving as a critical platform for players vying for a spot in the Indian Test squad, Kishan's performance in the tournament could determine his fate.
