Former India spinner and captain Anil Kumble didn’t mince words when discussing Virat Kohli’s costly run-out during the closing stages of Day 1 of the third Test against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Kohli’s dismissal came as India were reeling at 86/4, chasing New Zealand's first innings score of 235.

Kumble, speaking on Jio Cinema, expressed his disappointment at the recurring nature of such dismissals, especially at crucial moments. "You can't have this repeatedly happening in every game, so it's more than a concern at the moment," Kumble said. "You had an opportunity to get inside with just one wicket down of Rohit Sharma. And then yes, Jaiswal gets out, the night watchman comes in and gets out first ball, then this (Kohli run-out)."

The run-out, which took place on the third delivery of the 19th over, saw Kohli push a ball from New Zealand left-arm spinner Rachin Ravindra towards mid-on. Matt Henry's sharp fielding and precise throw from mid-on resulted in Kohli’s dismissal, marking his second run-out in two games. Reflecting on the incident, Kumble added,"Nobody expected the run-out. This was certainly not something that you expect of Virat Kohli getting run out in the last over or last few minutes of a day's play. And it was something that he just hit the shot and then went straight for a run, which is suicidal."

The incident has raised concerns, as Kohli's dismissal further compounded India's troubles after a late collapse, leaving them with work to do on Day 2.
