Bangladesh lost the ODI series by 2-1 in July against Afghanistan. Tamim Iqbal announced retirement all of a sudden after the first match in that series, in which Bangladesh lost by 17 runs. Tamim was the captain of Bangladesh at that time. After that, Bangladesh lost the second match by a huge margin of 142 runs. Though they won the third match by 7 wickets, Bangladesh lost the series.
Current Bangladesh captain Shakib blames Tamim for that series' defeat in the second part of the exclusive interview given to T-Sports. Before the first match of that series, Tamim told the press conference as the captain that he was not 100% fit but wanted to check his fitness by playing the first match. He scored 13 runs off 21 balls in that match with the bat.
Tamim was questioned after the match. Why did he play without being 100% fit, because of this he came under the wrath of the coach and the board. Tamim was so embarrassed by the incident that he decided to retire from international cricket the following day. Before the second match, Tamim decided to withdraw his retirement, but he took a break. Litton Das was appointed as the stand-in captain.
Shakib feels that Bangladesh lost the second match so badly only because of the captain. Therefore, he is giving the blame of the series loss to Afghanistan only to Tamim.
Shakib said, "I’ll completely blame the captain for our series loss against Afghanistan. There were still two matches left after the defeat in the first match. We made a comeback in the third match but we needed some time.
"Full blame goes to the captain. I have never before witnessed a captain playing the first game of a series coming in and emotionally announcing that he will no longer play cricket. I have seen this kind of incident for the first time in my life.
“I think a responsible can never do such an act. I believe it put the team in a precarious position and we are still recovering from that."
