India opener Rohit Sharma, popularly nicknamed as ‘Hitman’, has been known for his impeccable and attacking batting. Rohit has revealed the secret of making the innings bigger in a Facebook live session with Bangladesh ODI captain Tamim Iqbal Friday night (May 15). “I made lots of mistakes initially in my career. First 5-6 years when I batted at the middle order, I made lots of mistakes. When you come to the international arena, you are bound to make mistakes early on in your career. But I have realized about those mistakes is not gonna take me anywhere. So I have to think about my game. I have to bring some discipline in my game. And that’s what I did,” the 33-year old Rohit said. Rohit is known for his penchant of playing big innings, especially in the limited-overs format. He’s the only player to score three double centuries in ODIs. No one is even close to him. He also holds the record of highest individual score in ODI cricket (264* vs Sri Lanka in 2014). In addition to all of this, Rohit Sharma averages the most runs per innings in which he passed the century mark of any batsman in ODI cricket, more than four runs up on his closest rival, Sir Viv Richards. To make the innings bigger, Rohit gives credit to his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan as he always takes time initially at the crease which makes Dhawan easy by playing attacking shots.

“There are some things when I open the innings. I like to take my time initially. And here I get help from Shikhar Dhawan. Dhawan is naturally very attacking player. He likes to play ground shots. He doesn’t like to play aerial shots. And that’s his strength to find gaps. I give lots of strike to him initially. And I bat thinking these things. My job is to bat as long as possible till about 40 or 45th over. That’s what I think when I bat,”

Ro ‘Hit’ said. “And specially when we’re batting first, I don’t like to take too much risk. Because I know in the end I can accelerate the scoring rate. But initially I just want to give a lot of strike to Shikhar,” he added. However, Rohit also says when it’s the time of chasing, he also sets his mind to play attacking from the very beginning alongside Dhawan. “Specially I know when we’re chasing more than 300 or 350, then the plan is so easy. I know what to do. Then it’s not about Shikhar only hitting the ball, I have to also hit the ball. So I try not to make many mistakes,” India’s limited-overs vice-captain said. Rohit and Dhawan have been opening for India since ICC Champions Trophy 2013 in England. And they are established themselves as one of the most successful opening pair in international cricket.
