Glamorgan have signed Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando for the first two months of the season and he is expected to be available for seven County Championship matches up until the end of May.
Glamorgan have secured the services of Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando for the first two months of the 2025 County Championship Division Two season.
Asitha, 27, has taken 72 wickets at 26.66 in Tests and impressed on Sri Lanka's tour of England earlier this year, finishing as the highest wicket-taker on either side and earning a place on the Lord's Honours Board for his five first-innings wickets.
He has previously played county cricket for Nottinghamshire and will be the first Sri Lankan to represent Glamorgan.
Commenting on his move to Glamorgan, Fernando said: "I would like to thank Glamorgan Cricket very much for this opportunity. I am incredibly excited to be a part of Glamorgan and to return to the county cricket scene this year. My last outing has really helped me improve my game. I am looking forward to playing with Mason, Colin and the whole Glamorgan team and hope to do my best in the coming season."
His experience of the UK conditions is impressive and he will look to replicate the success he had during his previous stint in English cricket. Glamorgan's Director of Cricket Mark Wallace expressed his excitement over the signing. Wallace also mentioned that the club is looking forward to having Asitha Fernando as the first Sri Lankan player in history.
"We are delighted to welcome a bowler of Asitha's quality to Sophia Gardens for the start of the 2025 season. Asitha has good experience of the UK conditions having previously played county cricket and also performed very well in Sri Lanka's series with England here last summer. We look forward to Asitha taking the field for Glamorgan as the first Sri Lankan player to represent the club," Wallace was quoted as saying.
