England to host Zimbabwe after two decades

Zimbabwe and England have played 6 Test matches. The last one was played in England in June 2003. In any format, the two teams have never met in a bilateral series since 2004. Zimbabwe cricket team is touring England to play a four-day Test match in May 2025. The last Test match between the two teams was held in June 2003, more than two decades ago. If all goes well, this huge hiatus is going to end in 2025.

In all, Zimbabwe and England have played 6 Test matches. The last one was played in England in June 2003. In any format, the two teams have never met in a bilateral series since 2004. In the meantime, the relationship between the boards of the two teams was strained, and there were various political complications.

In the 2003 ODI World Cup in Harare, England gave them points by refusing to play against Zimbabwe. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has stopped the bilateral series of contracts with Zimbabwe since 2005 under government guidance. Recently the relationship between the two boards has improved. As a result, the series of two teams is going to happen again.

ECB chief executive Richard Gould said, "We are delighted to be able to host Zimbabwe for a Men's Test match for the first time in two decades. Zimbabwe has a proud cricket history and have produced world-class players and coaches who have enriched the game across the world. We are committed to developing a closer relationship with Zimbabwe Cricket and the announcement of this Test against our England Men's team is a step in that ambition."

ZC managing director, Givemore Makoni, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be playing bilateral cricket in England for the first time in over two decades after we agreed to play a Test match in May 2025. The significance and magnitude of this tour cannot be over-emphasised, and I would like to say a huge thank you to the ECB for committing to the resumption of cricketing relations between our countries that date back to the introduction of the game in Zimbabwe in the 1890s.

"The experience of playing a Test match against a top team like England is massive for the current generation of our players, coming at a time when our game as a whole is on an upward trajectory."

The four-day Test match between the two teams will be held from May 28-May 31, 2025. This is going to be the second four-day Test match for Zimbabwe. Earlier in December 2017, Zimbabwe played a day-night four-day Test match against South Africa. On the other hand, England played two four-day Tests earlier. Both the matches played in 2019 and 2023 were against Ireland.

According to the FTP (Future Tour Programs) 2022-27, only England remained to play a series against Zimbabwe among the 12 full member nations of the ICC. By hosting this series, it is hoped that Zimbabwe's importance in Test cricket will increase to some extent as well as fill that gap.
