The MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings suffered one of their worst defeats in IPL 2025 falling to Ajinkya Rahane-led Kolkata Knight Riders by 8 wickets at Chepauk on April 11.

Following the match Former India National Cricket Team opener Virender Sehwag made a scathing remark on Star Sports saying MS Dhoni’s presence at the crease till the end wouldn’t have made any difference to the match outcome.
Reacting to a question on whether Dhoni could have made a difference by staying till the end Sehwag didn’t hold back:
"I doubt CSK would have won even if MS Dhoni had batted. How many would they have scored? 120? How many overs did KKR chase the target in? 10.2? We would have come live at 11:30 PM, that's about it."
Sehwag highlighted that Dhoni’s current batting position doesn’t allow him to influence the game significantly anymore.
The Super Kings, led once again by MS Dhoni, managed just 103/9 in their 20 overs their third-lowest total in IPL history, and the lowest by any team in IPL 2025 so far. With only 31 runs in the powerplay CSK continued their poor trend with the bat.
KKR chased down the target in just 10.1 overs making a mockery of the total and handing CSK their fifth consecutive defeat the longest losing streak in franchise history.
Dhoni Admits Lack of Runs, Struggles with Partnerships
After the match captain Dhoni acknowledged that the pitch played tough in the first innings but admitted CSK failed to build partnerships:
"When you lose too many wickets, there is pressure, and with quality spinners, it is difficult. We never got any partnerships... a bit more application and we would be fine."
"It has been quite a few nights that have not gone our way. The challenge has been there, we have to accept the challenge. Today, I felt we did not have enough runs on the board."
