Alastair Cook announced his retirement from international cricket playing the fifth and final Test match against India.

Reports revealed that the 33 year old left hander told national selector Ed Smith that he was free to leave him out of the fifth and final Test owing to his poor form. The English opener made a fairy tale finish of his career slamming one last century in the farewell innings. His 147 cornered visiting India in the final appearance of the tour. But he desired to leave the battle field without featuring in the final match of the tour. Daily Mail reported, Smith, the English national team selector, heard Cook's quest but asked him whether he would pay another Test visit for England. Smith later confirmed his position in the playing XI after Cook agreed with the selector. Cook described the journey of his final Test as ‘surreal’ at a post-match media briefing on day four at the Oval as England reduced India to 58/3 in chase of 464. “It’s been the most surreal four days of my life really. I suppose if she [Alice, his wife] goes into labour tonight that will probably top it off but it’s been incredible," he said. “There’s a few of my friends here as well so for that all to happen today and every reception I’ve had over the last four days it’s just been incredible, even that last couple of overs when the whole crowd were singing my Barmy Army songs, incredibly special,” Cook said during an emotional press conference. India need a massive 406 runs to win in the fifth and final Test against host England.
