Australia have crushed Sri Lanka by 9 wickets in the second Test to cleansweep the Lankans on Sunday (February 9) in Galle. Alex Carey and Steve Smith's sublime hundreds set the tone in the first innings and then clinical bowling performances from Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon wrapped up Sri Lanka cheaply for an easy chase.
Sri Lanka were 8 wickets down and they had only Kusal Mendis as the last hope on day four, if they had to post something defendable score Mendis had to go big. But immediately after scoring his fifty, Nathan Lyon dismissed him as the tail didn’t wage to torment the Aussies and Sri Lanka were folded for a cheaply 231, setting a bare minimum target of 75 only.
In reply, Travis Head and Usman Khawaja had a brisk start as both of them were hitting boundaries at their will before Prabath Jayasuriya got Head rid off after his 20 off 23 deliveries. However, Marnus Labuschagne came in and along with Usman Khawaja's solid techniques both of them steered Australia home comfortably with 9 wickets in hands as the Aussies have whitewashed Sri Lanka by 2-nil.
Stand-in skipper Steve Smith has been named as the Player of the Series for his back-to-back hundreds in Galle. While wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey grabbed the Player of the Match award after his career-best knock of 156 off only 188 deliveries.
Both the teams have locked their horns for the two-match ODI series, commences from February 12 just ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
