BCCI defends Kanpur Test venue after rain delays criticism

The Green Park Stadium in Kanpur has come under fire due to its poor drainage system after heavy rain washed out nearly all of the first two days of the India-Bangladesh Test.

Although there was no rain on the third day, unplayable outfield conditions led to the cancellation of the entire day's play, raising questions about why the match was scheduled at this venue. This criticism has prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to respond, with Vice President Rajeev Shukla defending the decision.

In a statement, Shukla emphasized that Green Park is one of India’s historic Test venues and is designated as a permanent Test center. “This is an old ground and was among the five permanent Test centres. This is the first time in 80 years that we could not have any play for two days. But as history suggests, no match has been abandoned here," said Shukla.

The India-Bangladesh Test has faced significant delays, with two full days lost to rain. Shukla acknowledged the criticism but defended the decision to host the match in Kanpur, stating that it was unprecedented for such heavy rainfall to disrupt a game at this venue.

Shukla urged the public to consider the situation fairly, noting that rain delays are common in cricket worldwide. "There are lot many venues in the world where because of the rains, matches have been abandoned."

However, Shukla did admit that the Green Park Stadium lacks a modern drainage system, which has been a significant issue during the ongoing Test match. He assured that the BCCI is in talks with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to upgrade the infrastructure for better drainage in the future.

"When this ground was being built, stadium was being built, then those technologies were not available. Now technologies are available. Like in our Lucknow stadium, we have got that technology. And in Varanasi, we are building another stadium. There we have high-tech, modern technology to take away the water,” he added.

Shukla further said, "Today I had a discussion with administration on how we can develop this system by which the rainy water can immediately be soaked. Immediately after coming here (Green Park), I had a discussion with the authorities and they are also on the same page and I think we will be able to improve the conditions here shortly. We will get some time to improve the conditions of the ground and that work will be picked up. The moment I came here, I had a long discussion with government officials because this stadium belongs to government. We are in agreement with them. So, now for that, ground has to be dug up, new technology has to be applied and everything has to be done."
