In a tough outing against India, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto did not shy away from admitting the team's repeated mistakes after their defeat in the second T20I of the three-match series on Wednesday (October 9). Despite a promising start in the first few overs, Bangladesh were unable to maintain momentum, eventually falling short of their 222-run target by 86 runs, finishing at 135/9.
Reflecting on the performance, Shanto mentioned, "We made the same mistakes, not a good thing as a team. (Toss) Bowling was a good decision, first 6-7 overs we bowled well but couldn't execute our plans later." Shanto highlighted that early breakthroughs were needed after their promising start but lamented the team’s inability to capitalize further.
The key contributors for India were Nitish Kumar Reddy, who smashed a quickfire 74 off 34 balls, and Rinku Singh’s blistering 53 off 29 deliveries. Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman managed to take two wickets each, but India's batting lineup piled on 221/9 in their 20 overs.
Bangladesh's batting faltered early, with key wickets falling at regular intervals. Shanto further expressed his disappointment with the batting unit's performance: "As batters, we need to take responsibility and stay in the crease for longer."
Mahmudullah fought a lone battle, scoring 41 off 39 deliveries, but it wasn’t enough to chase down the target. Varun Chakravarthy and Nitish Kumar Reddy shone with the ball for India, taking two wickets each and stifling the Bangladeshi batting lineup.
Bangladesh now face a must-win situation in the third T20I to avoid a series whitewash. Shanto’s honest assessment of the team's shortcomings will undoubtedly motivate them to make the necessary adjustments for the final match.
